CHENNAI,
The Medical Council of India has sanctioned permission to Madha Medical College to admit 150 students this academic year.
Counselling for the seats at the college in Thandalam will be held on Friday.
The college has received the permission following a Supreme Court order passed on October 4. The college was started in 2011 and permitted to admit 150 students. As a minority institution it was expected to surrender 75 seats to the government. The college received provisional affiliation in 2011 and the permission from MCI to admit students had to be renewed annually.
It was allowed to admit students in 2012. However, in March this year, when the MCI team made a surprise inspection of the college, it found deficiencies and the permission to admit students for the current academic year was refused. In July, the MCI rejected the college's application for permission to admit students.
Though the college had rectified the deficiencies, permission was withheld after the court stated these could affect the college's ability to impart education and train students to qualify as doctors. The college then appealed to the Supreme Court which has now granted permission to admit students.
The college is affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. There are now 13 private medical colleges and 19 government medical colleges. When the admissions are completed this weekend, the State will have 4,265 students pursuing MBBS this year.
