Will Kareena Kapoor risk her health for six-pack abs?

by Agencies

It was recently reported that Kareena Kapoor Khan will be the first Indian actress to build a six pack abs for her next film Shuddhi. While Hollywood actresses from Hilary Swank to Mila Kunis all sport washboard abs, none of them sport six-pack abs. That's a guy thing, no?

Says a filmy fitness trainer, 'Six-pack abs tend to be reserved for those in their teens and 20s. It gets more difficult as we age because we get more subcutaneous body fat. It is possible even in over-30s but genetically, women have a disadvantage when it comes to that. Their bodies store more fat than men because women's bodies are designed to bear and nourish babies. Women have lower body fat enough to get six-pack abs and that might even interrupt their menstrual cycle.' (Read: Get six-pack abs the Farhan Akhtar way!)

What the experts say

Leena Mogre

It is not impossible for women to get six-pack abs but it takes a lot more effort as a woman's body is totally different from men. It is not advisable. A woman can take three to six months to build six-pack abs. One month is really drastic and almost impossible. Of course these days one can achieve it with rigid diets, aggressive exercises, body make-up, correct lighting, maybe even photoshopping.

It is possible for women to get six or eight pack abs but for that they need to drop their fat to seven-eight per cent and it is not something you should maintain for a long time as it can be dangerous. Arjun Rampal dropped his body fat to three per cent below the required percentage when he was training for Ra.One. Women need at least essential fat of 12 per cent for all organs to function. Also, how long it takes a woman to build six packs depends on the fat per cent in her body. Someone with 30 per cent body fat will take a really long time. But a woman with lesser fat percentage will need at least three to six months. One month can be achieved with a body fat percentage of 12-13, which only athletes and boxers have. Surviving on less than the percentage of essential body fat takes a toll on heath. Even atheletes who drop their body fat while training have to get their essential fat per cent back during off season. Besides, why would any woman want to have six pack abs at all? Washboard abs in women are fine. (Read: Iron is a girl's best friend)

The muscular skeletal constitution of a woman is completely different from that of a man. Yes, women can certainly get washboard abs and lots of cuts and muscles but to get six and eight-packs is almost impossible. It's madness and also frivolous. Women are endowed with higher body fat percentage than men and that gives them extra immunity and resilience. Given their physiological and psychological framework, it is stupid to want six-pack abs. A woman's beauty lies in her curvature and well-roundedness (not fat). When you push yourself for six or eight-pack abs and start depriving yourself of essential nutrients, you lose your glow and charm. It also causes imbalance of hormones resulting in agitated, harsh and aggressive prakriti (nature). Why would any woman want to have six-pack abs? We want to see well-nourished, vibrant and radiant women rather than scrawny and boney ones like mannequins. (Read: Bollywood actresses' fitness secrets)
