Parties brace for election results today

The crack of dawn on Sunday is the beginning of a D-Day for political parties, which will get the verdict of people in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and New Delhi as poll authorities are scheduled to count the votes in the elections that concluded on Wednesday.

The Election Commission has made elaborate arrangements for the counting of votes which will begin at 8 am at 129 counting centres spread across three states and Delhi.

The result of the Assembly elections in Mizoram will be known on Monday, when the votes are counted in Aizawl.

A clean sweep by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as predicted by the exit polls, could put a stamp of approval on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's prime ministerial candidature and send the Congress back to the strategy rooms to re-work its campaign for the Lok Sabha elections under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi.

Contrasting fortunes

The exit polls have predicted massive losses for the Congress in all the three states and Delhi with the BJP gaining upper hand in Rajasthan and national capital while retaining Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

The four states and Delhi saw heavy turnout of voters with records re-written in Delhi and Mizoram, which witnessed over 65 per cent and 81 per cent polling, respectively.

Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan saw over 70 per cent turnout.

However, despite the exit poll findings, the Congress is confident of ousting the 10-year-old Raman Singh government in Chhattisgarh and putting up a tough fight in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

The Aam Aadmi Party led by Arvind Kejriwal has queered the pitch in Delhi where it is expected to cut into the traditional vote base of the BJP and the Congress, leading to a widely expected hung verdict on the 70-member Assembly.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, seeking a fourth term in Delhi, is perhaps facing the toughest political battle of her life as some exit polls have shown her losing her New Delhi Assembly seat.Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, known for his "guy next door" image, is pitted against the Gwalior royal Jyotiraditya Scindia. Scindia's aunt Vasundhara Raje is the BJP candidate for the chief minister's post in neighbouring Rajasthan.

Madhya Pradesh has a 230-member Assembly and the BJP won 143 seats in 2008 elections. In Chhattisgarh, the BJP had scored an outright win in 2008, winning 50 seats in the 90-member Assembly.

In Mizoram, where too election was held, counting will take place on December 9.

Voting ranged between over 65 per cent in Delhi and over 81 per cent in Mizoram. Rajasthan recorded over 74 per cent, while Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh over 70 per cent.

With Narendra Modi spearheading the BJP campaign after his nomination as the party's Prime Ministerial candidate, all eyes will be on how the party performs in the current round of elections.

On the other hand, the Congress performance could point to the potential of Rahul Gandhi as the party's mascot ahead of the big fight early next year.

The contest was essentially bipolar between BJP and Congress in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, while in Delhi it was a virtual triangular contest with new entrant AAP making it difficult for the two parties.

Exit polls after the elections in these states have predicted a near rout for Congress and a good showing for BJP, which is likely to retain power in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and wrest power in Rajasthan.

Sheila Dikshit, seeking a record fourth term as Delhi Chief Minister, appears to be facing the toughest battle in the national capital with the emergence of Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party upsetting the calculations of both the Congress and the BJP. Harshvardhan is BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate.

There are 810 candidates in fray in Delhi for 70 seats.

While Congress and AAP are contesting all the seats, BJP is in the fray in 66 seats. It has given four seats to ally SAD.

Shivraj Singh Chauhan is involved in a tough battle with Congress in his bid for a hat trick, pitted as he is against a young Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia for the Chief Minister's post in Madhya Pradesh.

For the 230 seats at stake, BJP has fielded its candidates in all the seats while Congress is fighting in one less. A total of 2,583 candidates are in fray.

Rajasthan witnesses a keen fight between Congress led by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and BJP's Vasundhara Raje with both the parties facing each other in all the 200 constituencies. As many as 2,087 candidates are in thew fray in the desert state.

Like his Madhya Pradesh counterpart, Raman Singh is seeking a hat trick in Chhattisgarh where again both BJP and Congress are fighting it out against each other in all the 90 constituencies. There are 986 candidates in all.

In Mizoram, where coalition politics is in play, Congress is fighting to retain power. Congress is contesting all the 40 seats, while the MNF which heads the opposition front is contesting 31 along with Mizo People's Conference 8.

Zoram Nationalist Party is contesting 38 seats. A total of 142 candidates are in the fray for the 40-member assembly.

Elaborate security in place for vote counting

The Delhi Election Commission has made elaborate security arrangements for counting of votes to take place Sunday with 2000 Central Paramilitary Force and Delhi police personnel keeping a tight vigil at 14 counting centres across the city.

A total of 810 candidates were in fray in Delhi assembly poll.
Security at a counting centre in Delhi

Along with CCTV cameras and live streaming of proceedings through web casting, two layers of security cover have been set at all the 14 counting centres.

"Paramilitary force forms the inner circle of security of centres while adequate numbers of Delhi Police personnel will ensure safety from outside. Counting of votes will start from 8 AM Sunday and during the first hour postal ballots will be counted," said Delhi Chief Electoral officer Vijay Dev.

Over 43,000 postal ballots have been received by Delhi EC, while this figure was 1,600 in last assembly election.

Polling agents from political parties will be given access to the centres, Dev added.

Delhi has registered its highest voter turnout of 65.86 per cent in the assembly polls held on December 4.

According to election officials, 11,993 EVMs were shifted to strong rooms at 14 counting centres after the assembly polls got over and 24X7 security cover was mounted with Delhi police personnel and Central Paramilitary Force guarding EVMs and the surrounding areas.

"To ensure transparency and that proper procedures are being followed during counting of votes, a "live-watch" will be kept by senior election officials from control room through web casting," said Dev.

South Africa prepares for Mandela funeral

The government of South Africa was working frantically on the weekend to prepare for Tuesday's memorial service for Nelson Mandela, the "father of the nation". Officials were working around the clock "to meet the deadlines we have been set," said Collins Chabane, Minister for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation in the presidency, on local radio.

Heads of states and dignitaries from around the world are expected to attend the anti-apartheid leader's memorial service, including French President Francois Hollande, U.S. President Barack Obama as well as former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Jimmy Carter.

A memorial will be held in Johannesburg's FNB Stadium. Mandela will be buried in his home village of Qunu on December 15, 2013.

All hotels and car rentals in the capital Pretoria and Johannesburg had been held in reserve to accommodate visiting dignitaries, travel agents said.

South Africans were reflecting on the legacy of Mandela, who died on Thursday evening at the age of 95 in his home.

Many people called radio stations to exchange memories and stories about the former freedom fighter.

Former President Thabo Mbeki noted that "all the major achievements of the (ruling) African National Congress come from the Mandela generation." Mandela is considered the founding father of democratic South Africa.

South Africans now need to think about how they can live up to Mandela's ideals of creating a non-racial, equal and inclusive society, Mr. Mbeki said.

"I think we have to admit we are not there yet," he told local radio station Cape Talk.

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu said those who predicted the nation would experience racial tensions without Mandela as its moral compass would be "surprised how much stronger South African society is."

Keen to take kids to Pakistan, Badshah hopes for friendlier ties

Having fond memories of visiting Peshawar as a teenager with his father, Shah Rukh Khan harbours a hope to take his three children to visit his family's hometown, and hopes ties between India and Pakistan become "friendlier" and "family-like".

The Hindi film superstar spoke fondly of Peshawar when Pakistan's former foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar asked him about visiting her country, at an event on Wednesday.

"I'd love to! My family is from Peshawar and few of them still live there. I would love to come to Peshawar and bring my children over because my father took me when I was 15 or 16. I still have some of the greatest memories of the time I spent with my father in Peshawar, Karachi and Lahore. I want to take my kids there," said Shah Rukh.

The 47-year-old was born in Delhi, but his late father, Taj Mohammad Khan, came from Peshawar. He was a freedom fighter.

Shah Rukh, who is married to Punjabi girl Gauri, has three children - Aryan, Suhana and AbRam. AbRam is their baby through surrogacy. Shah Rukh hopes that the two countries forget their differences and join forces to have "the greatest of things possible for each other".

"I hope with whatever issues and stresses we have... I hope we become friends, we become friendlier, we become like a family and one together," he said, adding how he learnt the true essence mehmaan-nawaazi during his last visit to Pakistan. The actor believes the people of both nations harbour no ill-will for each other.

"When I travel abroad, I notice it even more, because sitting in your nation you can't make out. But when I go to London, Dubai or US, you don't even get to know who is from where - there's no cultural difference. I think people should forget (the past) and continue to be what we used to be," he added. IANS

"This is historic. This is what we have been waiting for. I need to thank the FIFA executive committee for keeping their trust on us and granting India the rights to host the 2017 U-17 World Cup," All India Football Federation president Praful Patel told www.the-aiff.com.

"I am also grateful to the government of India for their support and giving us the necessary guarantees which made it possible for India to bid for the 2017 World Cup."

"With the U-17 World Cup taking place, I strongly believe that the popularity of the sport will swell overnight and the mission of making football a pan-India sport will be realised," Patel said.

AIFF general secretary Kushal Das too thanked FIFA and Praful Patel and said the entire country had been waiting for this moment.

"I cannot sum it up in words what this means to Indian football," an elated Kushal Das said.

"The entire country has been waiting with bated breath for the final decision to be taken.

"I would like to thank our president Praful Patel for bringing the U-17 World Cup to India. Without him we wouldn't have got the clearances from the government of India and the hosting rights. I'm extremely grateful to FIFA for their support and encouragement," Das added.

FIFA WORLD CUP 2014

FIFA World Cup 2014, the carnival for all football fanatics, is now getting closer and closer with each passing day. With the draws out on Friday, 6th December, the oohs and aahs of the fans could not be missed. While some fans rejoiced for their teams, getting a relatively easier pick, some were left heartbroken seeing other big-wigs alongside their favourites. The tournament begins on 12th June 2014, in Brazil, with the opening fixture Brazil Vs Croatia in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Here is how the teams are grouped:

Group A: Brazil || Croatia || Mexico || Cameroon

Group B: Spain || Netherlands || Chile || Australia

Group C: Colombia || Greece || Ivory Coast ||Japan

Group D: Uruguay || Costa Rica || England || Italy

Group E: Switzerland || Ecuador || France || Honduras

Group F: Argentina || Bosnia-Herzegovina || Iran || Nigeria

Group G: Germany || Portugal || Ghana || United States

Group H: Belgium || Algeria || Russia || Korea Republic

Who got what?

Group A has hosts Brazil pitted against Mexico, Cameroon and Croatia. Brazilians have accepted the
group whole heartedly for it proves to be a relatively easy one for the hosts, sighting the crop of fast and agile youngsters and somewhat formidable line up of their side.

Group B will see a rematch of the 2010 finalists as Spain and Netherlands play their opening match against each other. Though both teams have come a long way, Spain will definitely be hurt from their 3-0 loss to Brazil in the much hyped Confederations Cup in June 2013. Chile and Australia too have in them the capability to cause an upset!

Group C is low on stars with teams Colombia, Greece, Ivory Coast and Japan and hence will not attract many a crowd but this group might turn into a competitive one, no denying that!

Group D, supposedly the Group of Death, will see the lackluster England side, comprising of who's who of the football world, battling out with the 2006 winners Italy and Luis Suarez's Uruguay. Italy has proven its sheer brilliance on the field time and again. Seeing Luis Suarez's stints with Liverpool, Uruguay too will be a hard nut to crack. And then there is England, still struggling to get back to their old glory days. Costa Rica looks like a lamb amidst the lions, but you never know, one can have a lucky day, any day!

Group E gives relief to the French as France clearly is the more dominating team out of the group that comprises of Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras, alongside France. France will not let this opportunity slip away, or so we hope!

Group F is a blessing to all Lionel Messi and Argentinean fans for Argentina is grouped with first timers Bosnia-Herzegovina, along with Iran and Nigeria.

Group G is also a challenging group, if not outright scary, to be in. With the power packed German side and Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal, the group runs high on adrenaline. Also accompanying them are Ghana and United States.

Group H will see Belgium alongside World Cup 2018 hosts Russia, Algeria and Korea Republic. Belgium is another side that boasts of many popular faces in the football world.

As the tournament begins from 12th June 2014, all eyes will be on the field, where the best of the world will fight to achieve ultimate glory, the FIFA World Cup 2014 trophy. Source: tvrage.com
