New plan for high school student in kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM,
The government is working towards creating a system whereby students in higher classes will pass without moderation, Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb has said.

He was speaking on Thursday at the State-wide inauguration of 'Snehapoorvam,' a programme of the Directorate of Higher Secondary Education, which aims at raising the quality of high school education in the State. Until Class 8, students were promoted irrespective of whether they passed or failed in exams. This led to pass percentage in high school classes getting affected. To avoid this, teachers needed to work more proactively among students in lower classes, said Mr. Rabb.

Aid and counselling

Teachers must identify students belonging to financially backward or broken families and help them achieve their potential. This was, in fact, the objective of 'Snehapoorvam' - to offer counselling and financial aid to struggling students.

This programme was being implemented by the Career Guidance and Adolescent Counselling Cell. The State Education Department had allocated Rs.1.63 crore for this project.

the musician

He is known for his strong stand on social causes, no-nonsense attitude and quick wit. But what Vishal Dadlani is best known for is his music. Part of the Vishal-Shekhar duo, the musician has to his credit several hits since his Jhankaar Beats days. His albums are known to have the best of both worlds - techno dance numbers and soulful melodies. He has a finger in every pie - he cuts albums with his band Pentagram, directs music for films, judges talent shows, is a playback singer and enthrals audiences at live concerts.

The singer-cum-music director, who will be performing in the city on October 19, though enjoys every bit of his hectic schedule, and is looking forward to rocking the city of Nizams.

"Performing in Hyderabad is always a lot of fun. The audience here has a very young vibe and it's a very cosmopolitan city. The crowd is very receptive and enthusiastic. So we're looking to be one among them and party with them," says Vishal.

The musician who has performed in the city several times in the past says, "I'd played some of our first songs with Pentagram in Hyderabad and we'd love to come back with the band to the city. Apart from that Shekhar and I have performed at college fests, private events etc in Hyderabad and each time we have had a lot of fun. This time of course our playlist will include some of our latest numbers. But our performance will largely depend on audience preferences. We're basically looking to just have fun," he says.

But what Vishal is really looking forward to is digging into some good old South Indian fare. "I'm not too big on the Nawabi fare, but I love Andhra food. I'm vegetarian and the variety the cuisine has to offer is amazing. So I intend to get my dose of Andhra food while I'm there," he laughs.

The music director, who is currently working on a couple of Bollywood projects that include Gori Tere Pyaar Mein and Bang Bang, says, "Music in films has changed so much since Jhankaar Beats. The focus today is more on dance numbers and less on melodious songs. While dance numbers are great, Shekhar and I consciously try and strike a balance between the two genres in our films."

Another thing that he is very passionate about is standing up for what is right. "Well, it's about time people did take a stand and raised their voice against issues - be it good roads or corruption. It's time we cleaned out the garbage," he says.

Cyclone Phailin

Cyclone Phailin has left a trail of destruction killing at least 23 people, knocking down lakhs of houses and affecting over 1 crore people in Odisha alone.

As the largest evacuation efforts in the country's recent history helped keep casualties to the minimum, reports from Odisha and Andhra Pradesh on Sunday night said that 23 people died, all but two of them in Odisha. Most of the casualties were caused by wall collapse, uprooted trees and in floods.

According to the IMD, Phailin weakened further turning into "deep depression" with wind speed of 45-55 kmph and lay over northern Chhattisgarh, parts of Orissa and Jharkhand on Sunday night.

A Panama-registered cargoship MV Bingo carrying iron ore was reported to have sunk in rough seas in the impact of the cyclone off the coast of West Bengal, but the crew were spotted in a lifeboat by a Coast Guard Dornier aircraft.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said the primary aim was to minimise loss of human lives and they have successfully managed to do so. "Property to the tune of several crores has been damaged...Rehabilitation will now be done."

With over 1 crore people hit by cyclone Phailin in Odisha that left a trail of destruction, the State government on Sunday announced food assistance packages for the families living in affected villages.

Food assistance

Mr. Patnaik announced food assistance packages of 14 days and 7 days for 'very severely affected' and 'severely affected' villages respectively.

"The families in severely affected villages in need of support will be provided food assistance for 14 days. They will get 50 kg of rice and Rs. 400 cash each for dal per family," Mr. Patnaik said.

Similarly, Mr. Patnaik said the families living in severely affected villages will get seven days relief. They will get 25 kg of rice and Rs. 200 for dal as food assistance.

The fishermen, who were prevented to go into the sea for fishing because of the cyclone, will be given 10 kg of rice each for loss of livelihood, the Chief Minister said.

People who have lost standing crop and their houses damaged in the calamity will be given assistance after due assessment as per norms, the Chief Minister said.

So far the government has identified 1,02,65,872 people as affected by the devastating cyclone.

Aus 96 / 0 for 17 overs

With the headlines dominated by the news of Sachin Tendulkar's retirement from the game, the pre-match hype around the ODI series between India and Australia has been minimal. If Tendulkar's retirement was big, the return of Yuvraj Singh into international action promised India of better days in future. The 31 year old southpaw showed signs of returning to his heydays with a brutal assault on the hapless Australian bowlers in the one-off T20I at Rajkot. The scene now shifts to the 50 over format of the game as the two teams battle for the No.1 rank over the next few weeks across the length and breadth of the country, culminating in Bangalore on November 2nd.

India have a firm grip over the No. 1 ranking thanks to their recent performances but a bad slip-up against Australia ( a 5-2 result in favour of Australia) will see the two teams exchanging positions. The team looks more or less settled, and the return of Yuvraj Singh will only strengthen the enviable middle-order. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have gelled well as an opening combination since the Champions Trophy, and although they are yet to match the achievements of some of their more illustrious predecessors, they have given the much needed stability at the top of the order. With a power packed and settled middle order, India do not have too many questions over their batting.

Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, the spin twins have struggled for impact in the early season. While Jadeja did show some signs of returning to his frugal best during the one-off T20I at Rajkot, Ashwin was a huge disappointment, sending down two expensive overs. Ishant Sharma has been another bowler under the cloud, more often then not flattering to deceive. The two Kumars, Bhuvneshwar and Vinay took 3 wickets each in the T20I and should be automatic starters at Pune.

On the other hand, Australia are beset with problems of their own. Hamstrung by the absence of regular skipper, Michael Clarke, the visitors will rely heavily on their batsmen to make an impact against the hosts. Aaron Finch, while scoring heavily in the T20Is has struggled to recreate that kind of form in the ODI format. The acting captain, George Bailey is the fulcrum in the middle order and he will need the rest of the batting order to give him support. In Clarke's absence, Phillip Hughes, largely considered as the best amongst the emerging bats from Australia will get a chance to prove his credentials. Shane Watson will be expected to play a big role, while Australia will also hope for Glenn Maxwell to continue his recent T20 form.

With many Australians having represented various Indian T20 league franchises, the familiarity with the local conditions will offset any natural advantage that India posses. The likes of Nathan Coulter-Nile and James Faulkner, who despite being on their first trip to India with the national team have been exposed to the Indian conditions thanks to their stints with Mumbai and Rajasthan respectively in T20 games. Xavier Doherty is the lead spinner while Glenn Maxwell and Adam Voges can chip in their bit as well.

Weather Conditions: A warm day is expected as the Maharasthra Cricket Association stadium gears up to host its first ever ODI match. The pitch is expected to be placid and a high scoring game is on the anvil although the Indian skipper expects the wicket to be two-paced.

Quotes:

You take MS Dhoni out (of the Indian team) and that probably answers your question - Australia's acting coach, Steve Rixon laments the loss of Micheal Clarke.

One also has to take into consideration the dew factor. Fast bowlers were unable to bowl yorkers while spinners found it difficult to extract turn and bounce - MS Dhoni is not too concerned about the profilgacy of his bowlers.
